Police Vulnerable​ Sector Check

As a condition of employment with 51ºÚÁÏ, all successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory police record check. In addition to the satisfactory police record check one may be required to obtain a police record check that includes a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).  This check is required where an individual is in a position of trust or authority over vulnerable persons, including students.  Prospective employees may not commence employment until the appropriate police screening documentation is received by the Human Resources Department.  Costs incurred in obtaining the PVSC is the responsibility of the candidate.

The Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) can be completed through the candidate's local police jurisdiction.  

The Board will accept satisfactory PVSC’s that name another school board and other employers (i.e. daycare centres, OCT, and employers that would require a police check for vulnerable persons) in Ontario and obtained within the last six (6) months.

First Nation, Metis, Inuit Student Support Worker - Student Programming and Support Liaison

The 51ºÚÁÏ invites applications from interested, qualified individuals from members of its O.S.S.T.F. - P.S.S.P. Bargaining Unit for the position of First Nation, Metis, Inuit Student Support Worker - Student Programming and Support Liaison.  This is a one (1) year contract position. 

This is a permanent, 35 hour per week position that supports both elementary and secondary students.  Applicants are encouraged to Self-Identify as the First Nations, Metis, Inuit Student Support Worker position is a designated position.

Job Summary

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year contract position.  Renewal of the position is contingent upon funding.

Nature & Scope of Position

The First Nations, Metis, Inuit Student Support Worker - Student Programming and Support Liaison plays a crucial role in fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive educational environment for Indigenous students and their families within the 51ºÚÁÏ community.

  • This position is responsible for the comprehensive coordination, planning, and delivery of cultural programming, with a particular emphasis on enriching land-based learning opportunities.
  • The Liaison will serve as a vital link, ensuring that Indigenous students and their families in schools not directly assigned an First Nations, Metis, Inuit Student Support Worker receive seamless access to essential support services.
  • Lead the coordination and planning of a diverse range of programs and events for K-12 Indigenous students and their families. This includes ensuring programming is consistently available each week, along with other special events throughout the year, ensuring all initiatives align with community needs and cultural protocols. (Programming will occur at times outside of regular school hours, requiring flexibility in work hours and evening availability.)
  • Develop and implement land-based learning opportunities that connect students to traditional knowledge, and practices.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous Knowledge Holders, community organizations, and families to design and deliver culturally relevant and authentic learning experiences.

  • Manage logistical aspects of programming, including scheduling, venue booking, material procurement, transportation, and communication.

  • Actively participate in and facilitate cultural activities, providing direct support and guidance to students and families.

  • Ensure all programming is culturally safe, respectful, and reflective of Indigenous worldviews and pedagogies.

  • Maintain accurate records of program participation, activities, and outcomes.

  • Prepare comprehensive reports on programming impact, challenges, and successes for internal and external stakeholders, contributing to ongoing program development and evaluation.

  • Work with Indigenous Lead to report budget expenditures related to programming with adherence to financial guidelines.

  • Track budget expenditures related to programming with adherence to financial guidelines.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and advocate for Indigenous students and their families in schools that do not have a dedicated Indigenous Student Support Worker assigned to them.

  • Serve as a bridge connecting connecting students and families with appropriate school-based resources and services (e.g., academic support, mental health services, special education).

  • Facilitate communication and understanding between school staff, Indigenous students, and their families, ensuring that student needs are clearly understood and addressed in a culturally sensitive manner.

  • Collaborate with school administration and staff to identify barriers to student success and work towards culturally appropriate solutions.

  • Assist families in navigating educational systems and accessing community-based Indigenous support services (e.g., health clinics, cultural centres, family services).

  • Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with Indigenous students, families, school staff, and community partners.

  • Conduct outreach to foster engagement and ensure families feel supported and welcome within the school system.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with Indigenous children, youth, and families in a supportive, educational, or community-based setting.
  • Experience in a liaison or advocacy role, connecting individuals to services and resources would be an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of diverse Indigenous cultures, histories, traditions, protocols, and contemporary issues in Canada.
  • Familiarity with local Indigenous communities, their structures, and cultural practices.

First Nation Metis Inuit (FNMI) Student Support Workers

Job Summary

Nature & Scope of Position

  • Work closely with the Superintendent responsible for Indigenous Education and staff to support improved Indigenous student achievement and well-being.
  • Liaise with FNMI community members, parents/guardians, organizations, and educators to partner, build, and maintain positive relationships that result in improved confidence and student achievement for FNMI students. 
  • Meet with educators and support staff to develop and monitor individual student profiles which will consider the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional/social well-being of FNMI students. 
  • Provide direct, in-classroom support to self-identified FNMI students to enhance organizational skills, foster student learning, and facilitate smooth transitions. 
  • Work with individual and small groups of self-identified FNMI students to foster a strong sense of identity and belonging.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, and antiracist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
  • Support all duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Justice, Inclusion, Equity and Diversity.

Qualifications

  • An understanding of diverse Indigenous cultures, learnings, and practices to enhance supportive strategies and promote the well-being and success of Indigenous learners.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively across cultures in different social settings and superior conflict resolution skills.
  • An understanding of current and emerging issues of importance in Indigenous people and communities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and collaboration skills.
  • A good understanding of health issues affecting youth and adults, such as FASD, drug and alcohol additions, intergenerational trauma, mental health and suicide.
  • A good understanding of cultural differences and how they impact treatment approaches for children and youth.
  • A high degree of enthusiasm, motivation and commitment in order to achieve the program’s goals and objectives.

  • Experience working with clients with Indigenous background is required. 
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous Language would be an asset.
  • A degree in Indigenous Studies or a related discipline from an accredited university or college would be considered an asset but is not required.

Superintendent of Education - Pool

Job Summary

The 51ºÚÁÏ is home to over 36,000 students in Southern Ontario with 4,700 staff members while operating and maintaining 53 elementary schools and 14 secondary school in 9 municipalities.  We also operate alternative and continuing education programs for the community.  We serve a diverse community and are committed to welcoming all into our schools.

Greater Essex is looking to proactively recruit talented, dynamic, and knowledgeable leaders for the future.  We are seeking potential candidates for the role of Superintendent of Education.  Selection to the Superintendent Pool will be for a five-year term, renewable at the discretion of the Director.  

Qualifications

In the selection process:

  • Consideration will be given to each applicant’s academic qualifications as well as the variety and scope of their professional experience.
  • Consideration will also be given to interpersonal, organizational, management and communication skills.

Temporary Student Support Worker

  • Must be available for day-to-day casual replacement and long-term assignments at various school locations throughout the City of Windsor and Essex County. 
  • Support teacher(s) with the preparation of learning materials necessary to assist identified students.
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of students by using proper lifting techniques.
  • Implement Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) in compliance with Board Policy and training. 
  • Provide supervision of identified students in and around the school.
  • Support and ensure the dignity of students with their personal needs.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
  • To work in consultation with the school-based team, implement and monitor programs that have been developed which support academic/cognitive skills, social skills, gross and fine motor abilities, communication skills and vocational skills.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities related to student needs as determined by the Principal.

 

Rate of Pay:  $21.89- $29.91 an hour, plus 4% vacation pay.

 

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess a minimum of a Grade 12 Diploma.

Temporary Support Staff – Support Worker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The 51ºÚÁÏ invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Temporary Support Staff - Support Worker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing to be effective as soon as possible.  All applicants applying for this occasional/temporary support position will be required to be available for day-to-day casual replacement assignments at various locations throughout Essex County and the City of Windsor.

Duties

The successful applicant, under the direction of the School Principal and/or his/her designate, will:

  • Provide oral and sign interpreting services to facilitate and augment communication for identified students.
  • Facilitate communication in and around the school for identified students.
  • Support the learning and special needs of identified students.
  • Participate in the maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Support the communication with parents/guardians.
  • Record daily observations and provide feedback to school administration and school-based team about student progress
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the student's IEP goals in consultation with teachers, administration and Special Education Services personnel.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities specifically related to the functions of students on caseload as determined by the Principal and Superintendent of Education/Special Education Services.

Qualifications

  •  Successful completion of a Communicator's Certificate program from a recognized college.
  •  Preference will be given to applicants holding Interpretor Training Program certification.
  •  A demonstrated aptitude and competence in sign language.
  •  Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated aptitude and competence in working with special needs individuals in an educational or residential setting. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.

Salary Range

  • $21.89- $29.91 an hour, plus 4% vacation pay
